I was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, in April 1955, the first child of my mom Betty, a homemaker, and my dad Keith, who was studying to become a high school teacher.
Naturally I remember nothing of my earliest years but I have a number of photos plus the home movies that my dad took on those old Kodak 8mm reels (now converted to computer format) that, while a bit grainy, remain interesting to watch.
I was famous – in Winnipeg – for at least one week – when the city’s main newspaper decided to display a photo of a child born on a special day in each of the months of that year. I was April’s child, born on Good Friday. Interestingly, my birthday has occurred on Good Friday only twice more, last in 1977! It has to do with the crazy way that Easter is chosen.
Our little family bought my grandparents’ home when I was a toddler, selling it for a cool $17,000 a few years later, and that’s where my memories begin.
